Echo Generation, Escape Academy & Luto - Steam Deck Tested | Jul 18

In case you missed it — catch up on recent testing

Kia ora Everyone!

We’re at the end of our first week down in Tauranga, getting our fill of land life! We’re still trying to settle into some sort of routine, and it’s been a bit of a challenge. We’re so used to a small space, going to bed and getting up with the sun, and definitely not used to being this close to the shops! We’ve been getting up earlier and staying up later than we should, mostly because we can just flick a light on now without worrying about recharging the batteries.

Eben has set up his work space and barely leaves it. He’s got a lot he wants to cram in before we head back to the boat. I’ve got my own list of jobs to work through too, so I’m busy sorting out what to tackle first while we’re here.

Just a heads up: I couldn’t get Framed Collection (GOG) working from this week’s Amazon Prime giveaway. I’ll rope Eben in to help me diagnose what’s going on and report back.

Epic Games Giveaway

This week featuring Echo Generation: Midnight Edition, Luto.

Echo Generation: Midnight Edition
Echo Generation: Midnight Edition Epic

This one's like a cross between Stranger Things, Jorel's Brother and The Most Important Game of the Galaxy, at least that's the vibe I got. I was totally into it and really wanted to keep playing. The 90s backdrop brought my childhood flooding back, man those were the days! Another one that's staying installed. I'll fess up, I play tested this for almost two hours, so consider yourself warned: it's well worth a shot!

I'll be honest, I was really looking forward to this one but it didn't grab me. I think testing it straight after Echo Generation made the shift too jarring, so I left it and came back later to see if that was the problem. Turns out it wasn't. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I'll give it another go in a couple of days.

Amazon Prime Gaming

This week featuring Escape Academy.

Escape Academy
Escape Academy Epic

This one took me back to the time Eben and I did an escape room in Auckland, years and years ago! We had a good laugh, and being NZ it wasn't quite as flash as the ones you see on TV and in the movies, but it was still worth it at the time. I kind of wish it had been more like this game, the whole front office setup and the room itself. It was a great one to test and the puzzles had me hooked. I've been meaning to get back to it, so maybe this time I'll put in a few more hours, though with everything else already installed it might have to sit on the backlog a bit longer.

Looking Forward

Next up on the free games front:

Epic Games: Epic’s giving away one game next week, Foretales, and it’s piqued my interest. It’s a card game, so of course I’m keen. Gwent in The Witcher had my number from the very first hand, and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales built a whole campaign around it. I really enjoyed Ancient Enemy too. Looking forward to putting this one through its paces!

Amazon Prime Gaming: More puzzle games for my backlog next week, woohoo! There’s another escape room game, a GOG code for Mystic Academy: Escape Room, plus In Sound Mind on the Amazon Games app, which follows on nicely from this week’s psych horror over on Epic and looks pretty interesting too. That last link goes to the Steam store page, as there’s no Amazon store page for it. We’ll get both tested once they’re live.
